Curbed sidewalks, automatic door openers, elevators, accessible bathrooms and parking spaces are all considered quite normal today. However, it took several decades of disability rights activism for the American Disabilities Act (ADA) to become the law of the land.

For the month of June, we turn our gaze to the colorful rainbow flags as we celebrate Gay Pride Month. The parades and confetti that we’ve come to recognize this month came on the backs of a long line of activists who fought for basic human rights for persons of the LGBTQIA+ community.

We celebrate moms all during the month of May. We celebrate moms for their sacrifice, their undying love, and their devotion to their children. And by moms, we mean anyone with a huge heart to care for little ones. We see you biological moms, stepmoms, bonus moms, grand moms, guardian moms, foster moms, adopted moms, aunty moms, and all the moms who put the needs of children – however they came into the world – first.

Some disabilities are visible with well-established support systems to navigate the world. Think wheelchairs. For certain disabilities, they’re not as visible. Think Autism. This April, we’re celebrating Autism Awareness Month. But what really is Autism?

On March 3, 2023, the world was shaken with the news of the passing of Judy Heumann, renowned Disability Rights Advocate. It’s been a full year since her passing. Her legacy has already outlived her. For Women’s History Month this year, we want to highlight the wins she secured for individuals with disabilities. Her wins were hard fought. Many of them we take for granted today. But had it not been for her unwavering spirit, many of these wins would not have been possible.

Last year, for Black History Month, we shed light on innovative trailblazers and champions for the cause of individuals with disabilities.

Thirteen years ago, Andrea began a new chapter at KenCCID. After spending many years working in various fields, she was ready for a career change when KenCCID was recommended as a place where she could use her diverse skills to make a difference.

As the New Year continues to unfold, we continue to revisit and redefine the ways in which individuals with disabilities are supported. From being intentional about using inclusive words to creating safe environments, support for individuals with disabilities spans a broad spectrum.
