The city of Philadelphia is soaring high with pride as our beloved Philadelphia Eagles have once again brought home the Super Bowl victory! At KenCCID, we know that teamwork, resilience, and community spirit are what make champions—both on and off the field.

“I would pick [my brother] up and sit him in a chair [on the bus], then go back outside the bus and pick up his wheelchair.” That’s how Glenn Lomax, the brother of the great Civil rights and Disability rights activist, Brad Lomax, described getting his brother around. In a video recorded for the 30th anniversary of the ADA Law, Glenn shared the difficulties that his brother faced as a Black man in the 1970s living with a disability.

The New Year always brings with it a sense of renewal. A renewed commitment to losing weight. A renewed commitment to staying within budget. A renewed commitment to taking that long-awaited trip. It’s the New Year! For individuals with disabilities, the New Year brings on a renewal that’s slightly different.

We welcomed 2024 with joyous hearts knowing that our founder’s mission had remained alive for 50 years. As the decades have come and gone, one thing has remained true – our devotion to the highest quality care and service to individuals with disabilities.

Giving is what we do here at KenCCID. We give the best of our abilities so that individuals with disabilities have the best shot at living a full life no different than that of any other.

Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy, Taryn M. Williams, announced that this year’s theme for National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is “Access to Good Jobs for All”. NDEAM is celebrated every year during the month of October.

KenCCID is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization providing services for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). KenCCID’s mission is to empower individuals with disabilities to have independence, self-sufficiency, and self-reliance.

Last month, we discussed the numerous resources available to parents of children with behavioral health issues. We’re continuing this theme of support. This month, we turn our attention to caregiving at the other end of the spectrum of life – caring for the elderly, particularly those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

August brings the end of the summer and travel season, and ushers in another school year. For parents of school age kids this can be an exciting time seeing your little one head out of the house for the first time to join their “big boy” or “big girl” class.
