Seeing is believing. Because of Dr. Patricia Bath, seeing is possible – even with cataracts. At KenCCID we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Patricia Bath, the inventor of the Laserphaco probe. Her invention and life’s work restored sight to countless individuals suffering from cataracts.

In honor of Black History Month, we begin with the incredible story of two revolutionary leaders, Brad Lomax, diagnosed with MS at 18 and his assistant Chuck Jackson. They were pioneers for both civil rights and the rights of persons with disabilities. Their story is an inspiration to us here at KenCCID as it encourages us to continue to be an advocate for ALL people living with disabilities.

In a heart-wrenching story that gripped the hearts of local Philadelphia residents and the nation, the “Boy in the Box” finally had a name: Joseph Augustus Zarelli. The case had grown cold for close to 70 years. In 1957, a young boy was found in a wooded area wrapped in a box. Not like a Christmas present. More like something discarded. Tossed out.

The National Council on Disability (NCD) released a 200-page report in October 2021 entitled The Impact of COVID-19 on People with Disabilities. In this eye-opening report, we get a sense of what life was like for people with disabilities during the pandemic. The National Council on Disability is “An independent federal agency making recommendations to the President and Congress to enhance the quality of life for all Americans with disabilities and their families.”

This past weekend we watched in awe as the world rung in the New Year 2023 with much joy, elaborate fireworks, and heart-pumping music. For many, this was the first time in a few years that they were able to celebrate together in large gatherings.

Like many other non-profit service organizations, 2020 through 2021 proved to be two of our most challenging years. As the pandemic raged on, we had to pivot in midair to continue to provide service to the individuals with disabilities that we served. With strict social distancing guidelines in place, we had to come up with creative ways so that our members continued to receive critical care.

The list of principles that would become the guiding voice for how we serve individuals with disabilities at KenCCID, was first formed over 30 years ago. In 1989, families, service providers, government officials and advocates for individuals with disabilities gathered to discuss the purpose of community services. They wanted to delve deeper into the types of experiences and opportunities that individuals with disabilities should have.
